How to Lighten Up the “Spiritual Path” and Find Joy in the Journey Once Again

So many I talk to on the “spiritual path” have a shared experience with me.

We often embark on the journey with great excitement, leaning into the body, mind, spirit connection. Gaining new knowledge. And adjusting our lives accordingly.

Then, at some point, everything goes from joyous to serious.

I started to intentionally eat more healthily, dress more breathably, speak more mindfully, consume more consciously (the list goes on) as I went from one extreme to the other.

Initially, I had a strong “why,” so these actions were in alignment. But eventually, parts of my “why” evolved into my “what,” shifting from intentional to dogmatic; enlivening to rather grave.

When we lose touch with our “why,” it’s time to recalibrate.

I’m now in the process of once again deconstructing what I’ve thought myself to be, learning what makes me truly feel alive, gathering those pieces, and recreating myself from them. A mosaic of my own making.

Here are 9 of the scraps I’ve kept, all of which have made my life lighter:

  1. Read a fictional book (it’s not all about self-improvement)
  2. Started a passion project (singing lessons) for the joy, not the potential profit
  3. Play with my son on the trampoline (I laugh to tears regularly)
  4. Call friends just to chat (and even *gasp* small talk)
  5. Dress up and started wearing my heels again (because, hot damn!)
  6. Eat and enjoy that thing (ice cream, beer, )
  7. Watch some trash TV (Bachelor & Love is Blind.. No shame here)
  8. Go out and party, drink, dance…Twerk the night away
  9. Laugh and poke fun at myself (still always with love)

This process has brought me to see that being “spiritual” isn’t about being super human, but rather about allowing ourselves to simply be human.

What now feels divine is discovering what sparks authentic joy. So I can express that joy outwardly through everything I do. (And that I take very seriously.)
